Weekend Results May 14th: UFC 198, BAMMA 25, Bellator 154

A packed weekend of mixed martial arts action was headlined in Curtiba, Brazil in the form of UFC 198. With the card stacked with Brazilian fighters of all stature, a top of the bill was Brazilian Fabricio Werdum defending his heavyweight championship against Stipe Miocic.
Having laid claim to his position as undisputed heavyweight champ in a victory over Cain Velasquez at UFC 188, Werdum has been scheduled for a rematch with the Mexican-American but due to injuries on both sides and a replacement in the strong, quick footed Miocic also getting rescheduled. Since becoming the full champion one year ago Werdum has watched Miocic knockout Andrei Arlovski in emphatic fashion and earn himself the chance at Werdum’s title. This was not to be the homecoming desired by Werdum, as he attacked forward in straight lines to be picked off with a huge right hand counter from Miocic inside the opening round, which flattened the champion and that was all she wrote. His pivot and plant of the feet allowed Miocic to deliver with full power onto the stalking Werdum, and rise himself to the summit of the world of mma heavyweights.
Earlier in the night saw the long anticpated UFC debut of Cristiane Justino, or more commonly known as Cris Cyborg. The former Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion made easy work of her opponent Leslie Smith dispatching of her via TKO (punches) inside the opening two minutes of their catchweight 140lbs bout.
Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza outstruck fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort in the night’s co-main event to earn a TKO victory agaisnt the veteran. This win surely places Jacare into serious title contention and a fight against the winner of UFC 199’s main event for the middlewight crown in Luke Rockhold (C) vs Chris Weidman.
Demian Maia submitted the dangerous Matt brown via rear naked choke in the third round of their welterweight clash to place himself firmly within title contention also. The BJJ specialist was clinical against Brown before finding the late finish in front of his native crowd.
The main talking point outside of the UFC was the performance of the hot talented Frnch prospect, Tom ‘The Firekid’ Duquesnoy. Duquesnoy showed why he has so much hype surrounding him as he destroyed BAMMA bantamweight champion Shay Walsh with a strong right elbow from the clinch in the centre of the cage to make himself a two division BAMMA champion. Having spent much of the last year and a half to two years training in Jackson’s MMA with the likes of Jon Jones, Donald Cerrone, and BJ Penn to name a few, Duquesnoy has created a ton of hype with his fan friendly aggressive style. Now with outstanding back to back knockouts over Damien Rooney and Shay Walsh, the call from Dana White is only a matter of time.
